In BPA, You Can Win Either Way!
With the BPA State Leadership Conference just two weeks away, many of you are busy preparing for your competitions – whether it be presentations, speeches, computerized events, etc. You all are putting together your best work because you want to make it to Nationals in Anaheim, California! Although some will, not all will bring home the gold from SLC. Does that mean you shouldn’t try hard because you don’t believe you have a good chance of winning an award? No, absolutely not! Everyone can win; it just might not be an award.
What?? How is that possible? Isn’t winning awards the whole reason you go to SLC?
No, it doesn’t have to be. When it comes to BPA competitions and SLC, winning can be classified into two categories: (1) Winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place or winning some other award, and (2) Knowing that you did your absolute best; looked and acted your best; invested time into all the opportunities at SLC to network and explore your potential to be a professional; and truly enjoy the experience that SLC offers.
If you can embrace that second category as another way of winning, then it won’t matter if you bring home an award or not – because you will still be a winner!
Take it from someone who has competed five years in a row and been to several state and national conferences. Competing IS important and you should take it seriously; however, it doesn’t have to be all about the awards. Having fun is most important as well as gaining new experiences to help you grow as a person.
Good luck with your competitions! Knock ‘em dead! I know you’ll do great.
